Verona – A Photo Diary

Verona is definitely one of my favourite cities in Italy. When my mother and I visited Northern Italy in 2009 we traveled by train from Milan (which took around 2 hours) to spend 1.5 days in Verona.

Verona

1.5 days is long enough to take in all the sights, but it’s not long enough to truly enjoy the city. The city is very walk-able so whatever you want to see you can reach on foot. I would’ve loved to spend much more time there, but we had planned to travel to Brescia and Bergamo the next day so we made it a short and sweet stay. What I would’ve done if I would have had more time there would’ve been to sit at one of the two main Piazzas in Verona (Piazza della Erbe or Piazza Bra) to enjoy a coffee and take in the slow hustle and bustle of the people in the city.

When you see the photos you’ll agree that Verona has a lot of things that other cities in Italy have as well, but Verona due to its small size and friendly people is so much more like-able. It’s also not as touristy as its bigger counterparts.

Shakespeare

First things first, the reason I wanted to visit Verona so badly was because my favourite play by Shakespeare takes place there. It goes without saying that I had to visit all the big sights related to Romeo & Juliet.

Please note, none of these sights are actually related to the play itself. They have been placed in the city in order for tourists to come visit. I like it nevertheless.

Casa di Giulietta: Statue of Juliet
Apparently it’s good luck to touch Juliet’s boob. You can tell by the shininess of the boobage area.

The below pictures will give a good general feeling of what the city looks like. I love the photos of the river (Fiume Adige) and the bridges and the photos of the city with the hills in the distance.

A definite must-climb in order to overlook the city.

Arena
This Roman amphitheater is actually still functioning today, even though the walls outside look like it might be abandoned. When I was there nothing was on, but hopefully next time I’ll be able to attend an event there.

Next to the Arena is a nice shopping street called Via Mazzini, I would have loved to spend more time browsing the shops.
