Jökulsárlón – A Glacier Lagoon in Photos

Every single sight I visited in Iceland deserves its own post. If I’m not careful, I could be writing and sharing pictures about Iceland for the next two months. I won’t do this to you though. However, Jökulsárlón really does warrant a post of its own. This glacier lagoon is unlike anything I’ve seen before.

Iceland - Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón, is a glacial lake on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. The same National Park where I visited an ice cave earlier and went glacier hiking a day later. The lake can be seen from Route 1 between Höfn and Skaftafell. The proximity to the ring road means it can get quite busy. Luckily, my mum and I visited in winter and it wasn’t that busy and there weren’t any boat tours to ruin our view.

The lake originates from a melted glacier and the icebergs have split from the glacier edge. They then move towards the river mouth along with the tide.

It’s very calming listening to the cracking sound of the icebergs when they move and float around.

The icebergs are seen in two shades: white and bright blue, which depends on the air trapped within the ice.

Diamond Beach

I’m happy our tour guide also told us to go to the black sand beach on the other side of the ring road. This is where the icebergs are making their way into the ocean.

We spotted a seal here, but it disappeared under the water too fast to take a photo.

The contrast of the ice against the black sand looks quite amazing.

I think Jökulsárlón is most beautiful at sunrise and sunset. We visited this place during sunset and witnessed the daylight slowly disappearing behind the mountains. As a result, the sky and icebergs turned into a colourful palette of light.

Conclusion

I’m sure that most people that visit Iceland will have Jökulsárlón on their itineraries. This post mainly tries to shows the beauty of the sight and that it really should not be missed.

    1. Weather can always be a bit of a hit or miss. I was lucky, but even then I’d like to return to see what it all looks like in summer.

    1. Dank je Linda! Ik zou er zo graag nog een keer naartoe gaan. Er zijn nog zoveel plekken op IJsland die ik niet gezien heb en die me wel super bijzonder lijken!

  1. Wow! Absolutely wow! We are heading to Iceland soon – and the images here have me even more inspired. Thank you for sharing such beautiful photos of this location.

    1. Thank you, Kate! I’m curious to hear what you think of the country. I for one can’t wait to make my way back there one day!
