North Berwick – Bass Rock

Another great day trip I made from Edinburgh in July 2010 deserves its own post (the others were grouped together here). North Berwick is famous for Bass Rock, which can be reached by boat from the town.

The rock itself is a volcanic formation, like Arthur’s Seat and Castle Rock (in Edinburgh). The island plays host to more than 150,000 gannets and is the largest single rock gannetry in the world. When you take the boat trip to the island you’ll be surrounded by birds (I luckily did not get pooped on, but some people in the boat did). You can see the flying to and from the island and plunging into the water.

This is also where I first came eye-to-eye with puffins. I didn’t manage to take pictures of them because they are quite small and I did not have a good camera at the time.

I recommend this to everyone who goes to Edinburgh, because it’s a singular experience and a super easy day trip.

The white on the rock are all birds (and poo).
