Ayia Napa

After we left Nicosia, we decided it was time to catch some sun since it had rained most of our time in Cyprus. We saw the weather reports for Ayia Napa and they were perfect so we headed there.

The stay was only planned for a day, and I’m happy about that! I was warned by friends not to go to Ayia Napa but to go to Protaras instead. I was stubborn and stuck to my guns so we booked Ayia Napa.

Limanaki Beach Hotel

The daytime in Ayia Napa was perfect, the hotel we were staying in was gorgeous, it was called Limanaki Beach Hotel  and our room was on the ground floor right by the pool! We even received a small bottle of wine as a welcome gift which we thankfully drank while soaking up some much needed sunrays.

Not only were we close to the pool, we were also close to the beach (and a small harbour) and the hotel had a very nice restaurant which meant we didn’t have to walk far from our sunbeds for lunch.

It was truly a perfect day.

Party Town

But then the night came and it made us want to leave straightaway. When I was 18 I went to Chersonissos in Crete, Greece. This place felt like it was 1000 times worse, or maybe that’s because we got older. When you venture into town everything looks touristy but bearable. There are some nice cocktails bars and quiet music is playing from the speakers of the restaurants. When you keep walking you venture straight into hell, aka the main square. Even at 6pm boys and girls were clearly drunk; hanging from various poles in various clubs and guys tried to lure us into the pits of hell with the promise of free cocktails. The bars looked dingy and not appealing at all. See, I told you I’m told old for this place!

We walked (read: power-walked) around the square and we went straight back to the main strip for a “quiet cocktail” while the party crazies where racing around traffic on quad bikes and mopeds.

Conclusion

There are so many nice places I’d like to explore around Cape Greco, which is close to Ayia Napa, but Ayia Napa would not be the right base for these adventures. Next time I’ll listen to my local friends and I’ll stay in Protaras, where the beaches are supposed to be stunning as well (without the hungover teens). Our next destination on the trip would be Paphos to take in some more cultural sights.
